PRESENTATION

The Kulturhaus Niederanven, a former manor house, sits within a large 75-acre park and consists of two buildings, the Thorn House” and the new building, which are connected by an exhibition gallery.

This private house was built in 1850 by the town clerk Mathias Schmit. Over the years, the house has had various owners, who gradually annexed the land and expanded the grounds.

On July 29, 1957, Mr. Georges Thorn and his wife, Mrs. Adrienne Prud’homme, purchased the house, which was subsequently named Thorn House.” In 1998, their descendants offered their birthplace to the town council with the aim of using it for public purposes.

On May 8, 1998, the town council decided to acquire the Thorn House” for the purpose of developing a center for the promotion of art and culture. In 2001, the project was put out to competition and awarded to the architectural firm Nico Steinmetz & Arnaud de Meyers. From 1999 to 2002, the Ministry of Family Affairs made the Thorn House” available to refugee families from Kosovo.

Construction began on 14 October 2004 and three years later, on 29 July 2007, the new cultural centre, the Kulturhaus Niederanven, was officially presented to the public and opened its doors in March 2008 to become a regional meeting place, not only for the inhabitants of the municipality, but also for all those who show an interest in new cultural developments, creativity, the spectacular and enchanting.
